Abstract
Background: Concerns on health issues, especially obesity, have caused stress about weight gain in working women and are believed to bring about a distorted body image. This might be one of the causes of the low birth rate in Korea, owing to women¡¯s fear of gaining weight during pregnancy and child rearing.

Methods: We conducted a self-report survey among 206 working women in the age group of 25 to 39 years from May 2015 to May 2016. The responses to the questionnaire were analyzed independently.

Results and Conclusion: Out of the 206 respondents, 86.4% planned on working continuously even if they were forced to work in different fields, and 69.7% thought gaining weight would affect their social life. The majority had an appropriate awareness of their current body image, but believed a low weight (according to body mass index) was normal/ideal. 33.8% of the respondents experienced stress about weight gain and they were hesitant to get pregnant because of this reason. Our study shows that Korean women of reproductive age suffer from distorted body image, and this might cause harm to individual wellness and the low birth rate.
