Background: Body weight has an effect on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The association between obesity and physical or psychological health might be diverse. In this study, we investigated the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and HRQoL in the Korean general population.
Methods: Using the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a total of 14,078 subjects aged 20?79 years (6,511 men and 7,567 women) were selected and classified into four groups based on BMI levels (underweight, ¡´18.5 kg/m2; normal weight, 18.5?22.9 kg/m2; overweight, 23.0?24.9 kg/m2; obese, ¡Ã 25.0 kg/m2). The Euro quality of life-5 dimensions questionnaire (EQ-5D) was used as an assessment tool of HRQoL. The relationship between BMI and HRQoL was analyzed using multivariate logistic regression.
Results: Among the male subjects, being underweight was associated with the problem of mobility (odds ratio [OR], 1.95; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06?3.59). Among the female subjects, being underweight showed a higher odds ratio for the low EQ-5D index score (OR, 1.76; 95% CI, 1.27?2.44) and the problem of anxiety/depression (OR, 1.46; 95% CI, 1.02?2.08). The problem of mobility in female subjects was associated with being underweight (OR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.10?3.80), overweight (OR, 1.31; 95% CI, 1.00?1.71), and obese (OR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.48?2.44).
Conclusion: Being underweight was associated with the problem of mobility for both genders. For women, it was related to the low EQ-5D index score and the problem of anxiety/depression, while being overweight and obese also affected mobility.
