Background: Osteoporosis is one of the major musculoskeletal disorders. It is an important risk factor for fractures in the elderly population and is related to age, hormone levels, nutrition, exercise, alcohol intake, smoking, and so on. In this study, the relationship between the blood lipid levels and bone mineral density (BMD) of Korean men was investigated.
Methods: This study used data from participants who underwent BMD tests during the Fifth National Health and Nutrition Survey in 2010 and 2011, which included 4,357 men whose ages were 19 years or older. The study included 2,637 samples, while excluding those who took calcium supplements; had histories of vascular disease, stroke, myocardial infarction, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, and thyroid disease; and unknown record of smoking/drinking/exercise, and those who did not participate in the survey. A cross-sectional study was conducted on the basis of the blood lipid levels and BMD results for the 2,637 samples.
Results: Higher BMDs in the lumbar region and the femur were measured in a group with higher household incomes and educational level. Higher BMDs of the femoral neck were measured in a group with higher physical activity. However, in the multiple linear regression analysis, blood lipid levels and BMDs significantly showed no effect.
Conclusion: No clear correlation was found between blood lipid levels and BMD. Prospective studies are expected to elucidate the relationship between bone marrow lipid profiles and BMD.
