Background: Obesity is an important social issue. Short sleep duration and vitamin D deficiency are known to be correlated with obesity. We investigated the associations of waist circumference (WC) with sleep duration, serum vitamin D level, and other factors in Korean adult women.
Methods: Data from the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in 2010, 2011, and 2012 were used, and 1,912 women, aged >20 years, were included. The associations between the dependent (WC) and independent variables (sleep duration, health factors, and serum vitamin D level) were assessed using regression analysis and two-stage least squares analysis.
Results: The mean WC was 77.44 cm. A U-shaped relationship between sleep duration and WC was found (P£¼0.05). WC was lowest when sleep duration was 8.58 hours a day. Serum vitamin D level was negatively associated with WC.
Conclusion: Sleep duration and serum vitamin D level were related to obesity in the Korean adult women in this study.
