Abstract
Background: The elderly in nursing homes are at a high-risk for depression; therefore they need an intensified depression screening. In this study, we compare the prevalence of depression between residents of a nursing home and a local community and determine factors related to depression in the elderly in nursing homes.
Methods: We enrolled 50 men and women aged over 65 from a nursing home and 50 patients of the family medicine
inpatient service of the Seoul Medical Center. We checked for the presence of depressive symptoms in both groups. Additionally, we analyzed the correlation between depression and disease-related factors.

Results: The prevalence of depression in nursing home residents was 50.0%. In contrast, this prevalence was 14.0% in inpatients of the Seoul Medical Center. Our results confirm that the number of nursing home visits by family or friends shows a statistically significant correlation with depression prevalence.

Conclusion: We confirm that the prevalence of depression in the nursing home was higher than that in the local community. We also identified the number of nursing home visitors as a depression-related factor. Thus, there is an urgent need for a cohort study to establish guidelines for early detection and treatment for depression in the elderly in nursing homes.
