Background: Vitamin D is important in the metabolism of minerals and bones, and it is also known to influence an effect on diseases such as cardiovascular disease, autoimmune disease, and diabetes. It has been proven that it correlates with the development of glucose metabolism and diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between serum vitamin D levels, fasting glucose, and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in nondiabetic adults.
Methods: Of the nondiabetic adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2013 and 2014, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels were measured. The participants were divided into three groups, and their fasting glucose and HbA1c levels were analyzed.
Results: The results of the analysis of the three groups revealed that higher serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with higher fasting glucose and HbA1c levels (P<0.05). In a multiple logistic regression analysis, the risk degree of serum 25(OH)D deficiency increased in fasting glucose (P<0.05) after adjustment for various factors.
Conclusion:. In this study, higher serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with higher fasting glucose and HbA1c levels. The risk degree of serum 25(OH)D deficiency increased in fasting glucose after adjustments for various factors. The results are different from those of previous studies, but a statistical correlation was found; therefore, further study is required to prove a definite correlation.
