Background: As the proportion of elderly people within the population has increased, so has the prevalence of dementia and cognitive dysfunction. Renal function is a characteristic that also deteriorates with age. The present study analyzed the relationship between renal function and depression, in patients with cognitive impairment .
Methods: We analyzed the results of the Seoul neuropsychological screening battery II from 96 patients (56 with mild cognitive impairment and 40 with dementia) who visited the Gwangju Veterans Hospital outpatient clinic from January 2016 to October 2016. We also examined renal function in these patients.
Results: We show that the depression scale score increases with the severity of cognitive impairment, and further that there is a close correlation between renal function (blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, glomerular filtration rate, creatinine clearance) and cognitive impairment.
Conclusion: As renal function decreases, there is a correlative decrease in cognitive function and an inverse increase on the depression scale, in patients with cognitive impairment.
