The effects of breathing exercise on the lung function and psychological state of male smokers

Abstract
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of aerobic exercise and breathing exercise on the lung function and psychological state of male smokers, and find which of these two exercises is more effective.

Method : The participants included in this study were male university student smokers. A total of twenty-four participants were divided into two groups: aerobic exercise group (n=12) and breathing exercise group. The experiment was conducted for a total of six weeks with three 30 minute sessions per week. Measurements were taken for lung function using Micro-Quark, and measurements were taken for psychological state using EASY¥²-EEG and STAI-X-1 survey. Pre-test measurements were conducted on week 1, post-test measurements were conducted on week 6. Statistical analysis was done using a paired samples T-test and independent samples T-test.

Results : There were significant differences in FVC and FEV 1 within the aerobic exercise group and breathing exercise group. However, there were no significant differences in FVC/FEV 1 within both groups. Also, there were no significant differences in of the lung function between aerobic exercise group and breathing exercise group. There were significant differences in of the psychological state within the breathing exercise. But there were no significant differences in the psychological state for the aerobic exercise group.
There were no significant differences in the psychological state between aerobic exercise group and breathing exercise group.

Conclusion : According to the results of this study, there is evidence in support of aerobic exercise and breathing exercise being effective for lung function. In addition, breathing exercise was shown to be effective for psychological state of male smokers.
