The Study of Patients Visited Korean Medicine Clinic in Athletes' Village Polyclinic at the 17th Incheon Asian Games

Abstract
Korean medical clinic, officially approved by Olympic Council of Asia for the first time, was established in athletes village polyclinic at the 17th Incheon Asian Games. The purpose of this study is to find out characteristic of patients treated at Korean medicine clinic and provide basic data for specialization of Sports Korean Medicine. We statistically analyzed 752 patients who had visited Korean medicine clinic in athletes village from 12, September 2014 to 6, October 2014. There were more male patients than female ones (64 vs. 36%). The majority of patients were Korean, followed by Maldivian, Qatar, Japanese, and Hong Kong Chinese. The most of patients were athletes, followed by team officials and volunteers. The rate of patients treated only onetime was 57%, and that of patients treated over twice was 43%. In distribution of disease, the number of low back pain was the most, followed by shoulder and knee pain. One thousand four hundred and twenty seven out of total 1,970 cases took acupuncture treatment. There were no doping issues in athletes who were treated with acupuncture. Patients from other countries as well as Koreans pay attention to the methods of Sports Korean Medicine including acupuncture treatment. Future initiatives should include the development of scientific measures to investigate the effect and safety of Sports Korean Medicine.
