Analysis of ringside injury report in mixed martial arts competition

Abstract
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to identify injury incidence, as well as to analyze injury type and location in Mixed Martial Arts(MMA) competition.

Methods : Data from 1280 MMA matches which of Korean MMA competition, Road Fighting Championship Central League, between April 2012 and November 2016 (5 years) was analyzed by using ringside injury report and competition result report. The rate of com-petition rule type of amateur, professional was 85% and 15% respectively. Injury type and location was classified by 5 ringside doctors.

Results : Through retrospectively reports review, injury incidence rate per 100 athlete-exposures was 9.3. The most commonly stoppage means was judgment, followed by submission, knockout/ technical knockout in 1229 MMA matches. Epistaxis, head contusion, fa-cial laceration, elbow sprain, groin low blow were the most frequent in this study of 237 injuries. Cause of doctor-stop was main-ly epistaxis and facial laceration. Frequent incidence of fracture was at orbit region and nasal bone, Frequent incidence of dis-location was at shoulder and elbow joint.

Conclusions : It is expected that this study would provide to MMA athletes, ringside doctor and competition officials with information that can be used to prepare injury. Supposing to accumulate data such like this study, later it will help prevent injury of MMA.
