Abstract
Objectives£ºCatechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) gene has been thought to be a candidate gene for pathogenesis of schizophrenia. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between a functional polymorphism of COMT Val158Met gene and clinical aspects of schizophrenia including symptomatology and therapeutic response.

Methods£ºThis study comprised 211 unrelated patients who strictly met DSM-IV criteria for schizophrenia and 170 healthy
unrelated controls. All subjects were of Korean origin. To evaluate the clinical symptoms, we checked Positive and negative syndrome Scale at the baseline and 6weeks after treatment.

Results£ºRegarding COMT gene polymorphisms, no statistically significant difference was found between schizophrenia patients and normal controls. There was no significant difference in symptomatology, therapeutic response among the genotypes.

Conclusion£ºOur study does not support the claim that COMT gene polymorphism may be related to the susceptibility, symptomatology, therapeutic response in schizophrenia. Further studies are required to better understand the relationship between the COMT gene polymorphism and schizophrenia.
