Gene-Environment Interaction in Schizophrenia
Kim Jung-Jin

Abstract
Despite devastating efforts to probing etiological factors of schizophrenia, the exact etiology and pathophysiological mechanisms of schizophrenia remain unclear. Numerous genetic studies of schizophrenia with linkage or association methods revealed no definite genetic factors so far and twin studies of schizophrenia showed discordances.
Environmental risk factors have been assumed one of the etiological factors of schizophrenia. Various stressful events that may affect neurodevelopment in individuals could be associated with schizophrenia. However, as genetic factors, environmental factors are not able to explain the definite mechanisms of schizophrenia. Recently, gene-environment interaction becomes a considerable factor in schizophrenia. Further studies of gene-environment interaction in schizophrenia will be helpful to understanding the etiology and pathophysiological mechanisms of schizophrenia.
