Comorbid Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Patients with Schizolphrenia : Prevalence, Clinical Characteristics, and Quality of Life

Abstract

|
Objectives：Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) have been observed in a substantial proportion of schizophrenia. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of obsessive-compulsive disorder in schizophrenia, and the relationship between obsessivecompulsive disorder and severity of psychopathology, depressive symptoms and quality of life in schizophrenia.
Methods：We interviewed 87 patients, diagnosed as schizophrenia and classified patients according to the existence of OCD evaluated by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-Ⅳ. And we evaluated the clinical and demographic data. To investigate the interrelationship, Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS), Positive and Negative Symptom Scale (PANSS), Hamilton rating scale for Depression (HRSD), World Health Organization Quality of life-Brief Scale (WHOQOL-BREF) were applied. Independent t-test, Chi-square test were used to compare groups and Pearson’s correlation was used to assess the relationship between Y-BOCS and other clinical rating scales.
Results：The prevalence of OCD in schizophrenia patients was 16.1%. Patients with schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder had earlier age at onset and higher mean PANSS-general psychopathology and total score than schizophrenia patients without obsessive-compulsive disorder. The compulsive act sub-score of Y-BOCS was significantly correlated with PANSSpositive score in patients with schizophrenia.
Conclusion：OCD is relatively frequent in schizophrenia patients and significantly correlated with the severity of psychotic
symptoms.
