Abstract
Objectives£ºThe aim of this study was to introduce a short-term psychoeducational program for families of patients with schizophrenia and to identify its effect as a strategy for reducing family burden and distress.

Methods£ºWe conducted a short-term psychoeducation consisted of 6 sessions for families of patients with schizophrenia. The Family Burden Scale, Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were measured to assess family burden and distress in participants before and after psychoeducation. Twenty-six participants who attended more than 4 sessions were included in the final analysis.

Results£ºAfter psychoeducation, families showed significant improvement in Family Burden Scale (p value<0.001) and state anxiety (p value<0.001). There was no significant change in trait anxiety (p value=0.198) and BDI scale (p value=0.474).

Conclusion£ºThese findings indicated that the short-term family psychoeducation performed in a usual clinical context was effective in reducing burden and anxiety in families of patients with schizophrenia.
