Abstract

Pediatric urolithiasis is a relatively uncommon as compared with that of adult. In certain part of the world, such as Turkey and the Far East, it is an endemic disease, but in the northeastern United States, a rate of pediatric urolithiasis is one-tenth of American adults patients. Several factors predispose children to urolithiasis. These are metabolic abnormalities, genitourinary anomalies, urinary tract infection and so on. Metabolic risk factors account for more than 50% of cases. Hypercalciuria, hyperoxaluria, hyperuricosuria, cystinuria and presence of infected stones are known for metabolic risk factors. The aim of stone management should be complete removal of stones, treatment of urinary tract infections, preservation of renal function and prevention of stone recurrence. After removal of stone, a detailed metabolic risk factors evaluation is necessary in all patients in order to treat them accordingly to prevent recurrence. Apart from the general conservative management such as increasing urine volume, medical therapeutic agents should be encouraged.
