Purpose: We investigated the clinical features and the value of imaging studies in children with febrile urinary tract infection (UTI) who visited to emergency room.
Materials and Methods: We identified 104 patients (mean age 12.7 months; 1-109) with febrile UTI who visited to the emergency room from January, 2007 to December, 2009. The radiologic studies included ultrasound, voiding cystourethrography and DMSA renal scan. We retrospectively reviewed the sex, age, hydronephrosis, vesicoureteral reflux (VUR), concomitant disease, previous urologic surgical history, prophylactic antibiotics, voiding symptom, pathogen, used antibiotics and antibiotics resistance.
Results: In 83 infants with febrile UTI who were 12 months or less, the male to female ratio was 3.6:1 (65 boys, 18 girls). However, female children had a relatively high prevalence rate of febrile UTI after the first year of life. Comorbidity of hydronephrosis and VUR was 40.4% and 19.2%, respectively. The most prenatal hydronephrosis has persisted until presenting febrile UTI. There was no significant difference between the prevalence of febrile UTI and the use of prophylactic antibiotics according to the VUR grade (p£¾0.05).
Conclusions: Infants with febrile UTI showed male predominence and had commonly hydronephrosis and VUR. Therefore, in infant with febrile UTI, especially male imaging studies were important for evaluation of concomitant urinary tract abnormalities.
