Abstract
Purpose: We evaluated the practice patterns of pediatric urologists in Korea regarding the use of prophylactic antibiotics to prevent perioperative infection when perfoming pediatric urologic surgery.

Materials and Methods: Self-completed questionnaire was mailed via offline or online to 120 pediatric urologists who practiced in secondary or tertiary hospitals in Korea. The responses were collected and statistically analyzed. The questionnaire included 29 items concerning the protocol for the use of prophylactic antibiotics to prevent perioperative infection in pediatric urologic surgery.

Results: The responses rate was 44.2% (53/120 urologists). The important factors for using prophylactic antibiotics were potential adverse reactions to antibiotics (96.2%), reduction of the infection risk with antibiotic prophylaxis (94.3%) and the infection risk without antibiotic prophylaxis (88.7%). The most common timing for administering first antibiotics was 1 hour or more before surgery (39.6%). Some urologists responded that they would give a patient cephalosporins for surgical antibiotic prophylaxis even though the patient had a history of rash/wheezing associated with penicillin (39.6%/24.5%). Most of the urologists used postoperative antibiotics.

Conclusions: Korean urologists in the secondary or tertiary hospitals have a high level of understanding of the protocol for prophylactic antibiotics. These results can be used as baseline data for establishing the protocol for prophylactic antibiotics to prevent perioperative infection in pediatric urologic surgery.
