Abstract
Hydronephrosis is defined as a dilation of the renal pelvis and calyces. The widespread use of prenatal ultrasonography has resulted in an increased recognition of fetal hydronephrosis. Hydronephrosis can result from anatomic or functional processes interrupting the flow of urine, or from other congenital urologic anomalies such as vesicoureteral reflux; however, this condition can also result from benign processes, such as physiologic dilation. The challenge in the management of neonatal hydronephrosis is to decide which child can be observed, which one can be managed medically, and which one requires surgical intervention. Despite the fact that hydronephrosis is a very frequent condition in the neonatal population, there is a surprising lack of consensus regarding diagnosis and management of this common condition. This article reviews the diagnosis and treatment of neonatal hydronephrosis.
