Cryptorchidism: Proposal for Korean Guideline
Lee Sang-Wook

Abstract
Cryptorchidism is a very frequent condition in the pediatric population. Although the cause for testicular maldescent remains unknown in most cases, several pathogenic mechanisms for cryptorchidism have been described. Cryptorchidism may have long-term consequences on testicular function, including spermatogenesis, and on the risk for testicular cancer, even after successful treatment. The diagnosis of cryptorchidism is clinical. To date, no imaging technique for non-palpable testes has proven superior to laparoscopy, which also allows treatment if there is a testis. In boys with bilateral non-palpable testes and in boys with associated hypospadias, chromosomal and endocrinologic evaluation may be performed. The mainstay of treatment for cryptorchidism is surgical orchiopexy. Spontaneous descent of testes can be expected during the first six months of life, and orchiopexy should probably be done at the age of 6 to 12 months of age, or upon diagnosis, if that occurs later.
