Laparoscopy in the Field of Pediatric Urology
Ryu Dong-Soo

Abstract
The use of laparoscopy in pediatric urology has evolved dramatically as a diagnostic method for identifying impalpable testis and a simple extirpative procedure for complex reconstructive surgeries. Laparoscopy has some advantages over open surgery including magnified visualization, less postoperative pain, a shorter hospital stay, better cosmetic results, and faster recovery. However, the development of laparoscopy as a method of treating urological diseases has progressed more slowly in children compared to adults, perhaps due to the availability of miniaturized instruments, steep learning curve, and high success of traditional open surgery. With experience and encouraging results demonstrating feasibility, improved operative times, and better cosmetic outcomes, many pediatric urologic procedures could be performed with laparoscopy such as orchiopexy, nephrectomy, adrenalectomy, and dismembered pyeloplasty. Initial experiences with laparoscopic ureteric re-implantation and laparoscopically-assisted bladder reconstructive surgery have also been reported. This article seeks to provide a comprehensive review of the evolution of laparoscopy from its inception to present-day applications in the field of pediatric urology, including the current indications and results of various laparoscopic procedures.
