Purpose: There are many options in the surgical approach for nephrectomy in children. We report our experience in three children who underwent single-instrument port laparoscopic (SImPL) nephrectomy.
Materials and Methods : Between January 2009 and September 2009, a single surgeon consecutively performed SImPL nephrectomy with retroperitoneal approach on three children (aged 2-7 years). The kidney was removed through minimal extension of the 10mm port scar. The perioperative clinical data were reviewed retrospectively.
Results: SImPL nephrectomy was completed successfully in all three patients without conversion to conventional laparoscopy or open conversion. Blood loss was minimal. The mean operation time was 90 minutes (range 50-125), and patients began oral intake on the first postoperative day. Mean postoperative hospital stay was 3.7 days (range 3-4).
Conclusions: SImPL nephrectomy for children is a safe and feasible method. Further experience with this technique is warranted.
