Abstract
Distal Renal tubular acidosis (dRTA) is characterized by impaired ability to acidify the urine in the distal tubules and it is often accompanied by hypokalemia, low urinary NH4 and hypocitraturia. In contrast to proximal RTA, nephrocalcinosis and nephrolithiasis frequently occur in dRTA. Most of these patients are treated with sodium bicarbonate and potassium supplementation. In this article, we report a case of a 16-year-old woman who presented with nephrocalcinosis and urolithiasis. She had been diagnosed with renal tubular acidosis at 8 years of age and treated with medications. We perfomed the extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) to threat both ureter and renal stones along with periodic sodium bicarbonate, potassium citrate supplementations.
