Abstract

Pediatric inguinal hernias and hydroceles share a common etiology and are managed with similar strategies. An inguinal hernia is a protrusion of the intra-abdominal contents into the inguinoscrotal canal often due to a failure the processus vaginalis to close. A hydrocele is the accumulation of fluid within the same spatial remnant. Repairing inguinal hernias
and hydroceles is one of the most common procedures in pediatric surgery practice. The advent of minimal access techniques has particularly changed conventional strategies for hernia management. This article reviews the nature, clinical features, surgical options, and outcomes of these two related conditions in children. The authors also discuss current management of contralateral hernias and hernias in premature infants. The management of an incarcerated hernia as well as laparoscopic management of inguinal hernias and hydroceles are also reviewed.
