Background: The purpose of this comparative study is to identify the relationship between electronic cigarette and smoking cessation trial among South Korean 12-18 aged adolescent smokers.
Methods: Studying the relationship between smoking only group and dual use group (those who conventional cigarette and electronic cigarette both) by analyzing the survey data conducted by the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey in 2014. Sex, school year, stress level, scholastic performance, smoking level, passive smoking level, alcohol consumption, and subjective physical condition were investigated by an anonymous online survey. Surveyed data were analyzed with multivariate logistic regression.
Results: In a comparison between smoking only group and electronic cigarette dual smoking group, the use of electronic cigarettes was not dearly correlated with smoking cessation trial. The electronic cigarette dual smoking group is showed various reasons of using electronic cigarette as economic, healthy, less harmful, no smell, availability at school and home, and curiosity so on.
Conclusion: Electronic cigarette smoking does not help stop smoking of heavy youth smokers. Heavy youth smokers used the electronic cigarette to save money and to escape the restriction on smoking and to get worse nicotine addiction finally. These data suggest that electronic cigarette use among youth is an emerging public health issue, even though there remains no evidence that it represents a new pathway into smoking. Further research is needed to explore why young people use electronic cigarette, and to develop interventions to prevent further increases in use.
