Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this investigate was to find adequate treatment in elbow dislocation by comparing each
result of conservative treatment and surgical treatment

Materials and Methods: Twenty six patients with elbow dislocation were treated between January 1999 and July 2002. Fourteen patients were treated conservatively as for simple dislocation, and twelve patients surgically as for complex dislocation. The cause of injury in conservative group was slip-down in ten and fall-down in two cases. On the contrary, in surgical group, it was slip-down in five, fall-down in six and traffic accident in three cases. The mean follow-up period was 26 months. The clinical results were evaluated using the Mayo Elbow Performance Index (MEPI).

Results: In conservatively treated cases, clinical results was excellent in 11 cases and good in 1 case with nearly full ROM and no pain. In surgically treated cases, clinical results were excellent in 8 cases and good in 6 cases with ROM of extension-10 and flexion 110 and mild pain in 3 cases and muscle weakness in 3 cases without significant difference (P<0.05).

Conclusion: In simple elbow dislocation, conservative treatment was usually excellent result. In complex islocation of elbow, we could achieve comparable good result by early surgical intervention.
