Purpose: If septal cartilage amount is predictable, this can reduce the possibility of unnecessary harvesting of other donor site for cartilage graft and more precise plan can be stablished, preoperatively. So, authors measured septal cartilage amount using sagittal view of facial bone CT.
Methods & materials: From August 2008 to December 2008, authors studied 11 patients(8 men, 3 women) age range between 17 and 56, average 32.3, who underwent rhinoplasty using septal cartilage. To measure septal cartilage amount preoperatively, authors chose series of 1-2 sagittal views of facial bone CT which shows best outline of vomer, perpendicular plate of ethmoid bone and anterior nasal spine. After then, we drew quadrangular shape along border of septal cartilage. Multiplying the dimension of septal cartilage except 1 cm of dorsal border and caudal border with thickness of septal cartilage, we could obtain septal cartilage amount.
Results: There was no difference in septal cartilage amount between preoperative(0.402 cc) and intraopertive(0.424 cc) measurement (p=0.797).
Conclusion: Therefore, authors report that it was possible to measure septal cartilage amount using sagittal view of facial bone CT preoperatively.
