Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of early treatment with intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) for the macular edema secondary to branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO).

Materials and Methods: Eighteen eyes of 18 patients with severe macular edema secondary to BRVO were enrolled. The duration of symptom was less than three months and grid laser treatment was not applicable due to severe retinal hemorrhages. Visual acuity and macular thickness by optical coherence tomography (OCT) were evaluated before and after IVTA. The mean duration of BRVO was 42.7 days.

Results: Initial mean visual acuity (VA) was log MAR 0.75¡¾0.30 and initial macular thickness (MCT) was 503.50¡¾ 104.47 ¥ìm. Visual acuity improved to log MAR 0.48¡¾0.27, log MAR 0.46¡¾0.69, log MAR 0.41¡¾0.30 and MCT was 267.55¡¾117.24 ¥ìm, 263.90¡¾106.30 ¥ìm, 314.94¡¾134.52 ¥ìm at postoperative 1, 3, 6 months respectively. Recurrent edema was developed in 9 eyes and related with initial low VA.

Conclusion: Early treatment of acute macular edema secondary to BRVO with IVTA was effective in reducing MCT and rapid recovery of VA. Recurrent edema was more common in patients with initial low VA.
