Abstract
Purpose: Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) is still life-threatening disease in the industrialized modern era.
Emergency Medical Services (EMSs) play a key role in the recognition and treatment of AMI. We examined difference in time and general characteristics between who used EMSs and who used private transportation when they sustained AMI.

Methods: This was a retrospective observation study with data from Daegu Catholic University Hospital, Emergency Department (ED). From Jan 2005 to Dec 2007, 84 patients enrolled in this study. Inclusion criteria for patients were 1) ED direct contact, 2) final diagnosis: AMI, 3) primary PCI. Exclusion criteria were 1) patients from other hospital for reperfusion therapy, 2) coronary angiogram only. We analyzed the medical data by using SPSS 14.0 and compared between EMS user and Non EMS user in age, sex, vital sign on ED, chief complaints, insurance, symptom onset time, Killip classification, smoking, infarction site, mortality, and times(symptoms to door time, door to ECG time, door to lab time, door to balloon time).

Results: Between EMS user (n=32) and Non EMS user (n=52), the factors of mortality, symptom onset times showed statistical difference by Chi-square test. Other factors and times didn¡¯t showed statistical difference by independent t test, Chi-square test.

Conclusion: The result of this study indicate the realty of Korean EMS (119) is still not enough for the AMI victims. We need to educate to the lay public about EMS, to the 119 rescue about advanced life support and medical oversight.
