The Surgical Outcome and Prognostic Factor of Vitrectomy for Epimacular Membrane
Kim Yun-Young

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the clinical outcome of vitrectomy on epimacular membrane according to the etiology and
preoperative visual acuity and to identify prognostic factors for improving visual acuity.

Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 45 eyes(45 patients) with epimacular membrane who were treated by vitrectomy and followed for more than 3 months.

Results: Twenty five eyes(55.6%) had idiopathic epimacular membrane, and 20 eyes(44.4%) had secondary
epimacular membrane. Postoperative average increase of visual acuity (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution, logMAR) were 0.44, 0.35, respectively and these differences were not statistically different (p=0.325). The visual acuity improved 2 or more lines in 35 eyes (78%) and the highest visual gain was occurred in patients with preoperative visual acuity between 0.1 to 0.4 and the increase in log MAR was 0.54. Preoperative visual acuity was statistically significant prognostic factor associated with postoperative visual acuity of 0.5 or better (p=0.01) and idiopathic epimacular membrane had borderline significance (p=0.05).

Conclusion: This study showed that vitrectomy for epimacular membrane results in favorable visual outcome and good preoperative visual acuity is significant prognostic factor associated with final visual acuity of 0.5 or better.
