Clinical Approach and Pharmatherapeutic Management of Pain with Geriatric Patient
Lee Dong-Kuck

Abstract
Pain is among the most common reasons elderly patients present for medical care. Acute and chronic pain is debilitating and diminishes functional status. Acute pain often is associated with an identifiable injury or trauma, responds to therapeutic options, and resolves in less than 1 to 3 months. Chronic pain in the geriatric patient presents a treatment challenge because the multiple pathogenesis may be unclear, providing less opportunity to predict the course of recovery. Among the goals of the clinician is providing patients an opportunity to regain some control over their lives by providing the most effective and efficient pain treatment regimen possible. Clinicians who care for elderly patients need to know and apply principles of geriatric pharmacotherapy in order to maximize the benefits of drugs in their elderly patients and minimize drug-related problems. Analgesic therapy may include opioids, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and other unique medications from a variety of classes. The use of all these drugs is more successful if the social, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and even spiritual components of pain are addressed.
