Kim Dae-Dong

Yoo Young-Oon
Abstract
Laparoscopic splenectomy is currently a safe procedure and offers less pain, better cosmesis, and shorter hospital stay than the traditional open procedure. However, there have been a few reports of laparoscopic splenectomy of giant splenic abscess. We present the case of a 29-year old woman who was managed for splenic abscess. At first she presented with left upper abdominal pain for several days. CT scan revealed a cystic mass having a diameter of 23cm. Laparoscopic splenectomy was performed after preoperative percutaneous abscess drainage. The postoperative course was uneventful. Laparoscopic approach should be tried first even in patients with a huge abscess and preoperative drainage facilitates laparoscopic splenectomy.
