Diabetes and Cancer
Sohn Ho-Sang

Abstract
Diabetes and cancer are common diseases with tremendous impact on health worldwide. Epidemiologic evidence suggests that people with diabetes are at significantly higher risk for many forms of cancer. The association between
diabetes and some cancers may partly be due to shared risk factors between the two diseases, such as aging, obesity,
diet, and physical inactivity, but potential biologic links between the two diseases are incompletely understood. Diabetes may influence the neoplastic process by several mechanisms, including insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia, chronic inflammation and oxidative stress. Recently, there are several data that some medications used to treat hyperglycemia are associated with either increased or reduced risk of cancer. The evidence for specific drugs affecting cancer risk is limited. We need more efforts to find out risk factors common to both diabetes and cancer and to diagnose and treat cancer early in diabetic patients.
