Performance Competence of Core Basic Nursing Skills and Empathy Ability of Nursing Students

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the level of performance competence of core basic nursing skills and empathy ability and to identify their correlated variables of nursing students.

Materials and Methods: The participants were 312 nursing students of three universities in Daegu city. All of these
students had experienced clinical training during one semester or more. A structured questionnaire was used to collect
data, and data were analyzed by applying frequency, percentage, average, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, and
Pearson correlation with PC-SPSS 19.0.

Results: There was differences in the performance competence of core basic nursing skills according to the score(F=4.220, p=.002), personality (F=5.492, p=.001). The performance competence of core basic nursing skills correlated with experiences of core basic nursing observation (r=0.195, p=.001). There was also differences in empathy ability according to the gender (t=-3.214, p=.005).

Conclusion: It is firstly important to permit students experience core basic nursing observation to encourage their
performance competence of core basic nursing skills. It is necessary to explore more effective way to develop basic
nursing skills and empathy ability.
