Hungry Bone Syndrome Following Thyroidectomy for Thyrotoxicosis with Thyroid Cancer: A Case Report
Jung Young-Ju

Abstract
Hypocalcemia is a relatively common complication following thyroidectomy. In general, damage, devascularization or inadvertent removal of the parathyroid glands are the main causes for hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy, but other causes including acute calcitonin release from the thyroid gland and ¡°hungry bone syndrome¡±due to postoperative reversal of thyrotoxic osteodystrophy may be important contributory factors. Hungry bone syndrome is common in patients with hyperparathyroidism after parathyroidectomy and less frequently, has been described after thyroidectomy in patients with hyperthyroidism. We have experienced a 25-year-old woman who presented thyroid papillary carcinoma accompanied by thyrotoxicosis and developed hungry bone syndrome after total thyroidectomy. We report this case with a review of the literature.
