Abstract
Hemichorea-hemiballism is an uncommon involuntary movement that designates a unilateral uncontrollable, poorly
patterned flinging movement of limb at variable amplitude. Hemichorea-hemiballism can be associated with
cerebrovascular disease, brain tumors, toxins and infections. But nonketotic hyperglycemia induced hemichoreahemiballism
is rare.
We report 2 cases of hemichorea-hemiballism associated with non-ketotic hyperglycemia in Diabetes Mellitus patients.
Brain MRIs showed a high signal intensity in the contralateral putamen on T1-weighted images. Although these
abnormalities in the putamen are considered to be the cause of involuntary movement, the exact pathophysiological
mechanisms of these abnormalities are not yet clear and further investigations are needed.
