Purpose: In order to investigate antiviral effects of Galla rhosis on rotaviral infection, the present study was carried
out using the MA-104 cells with a korean rotavirus isolate.
Methods: The gall sample was extracted with purified water at 70¡£C for 5 hours as described before. The extracts were filtered, lyophilized, and dissolved in a solution as required. Antimicrobial activity of the extracts was examined by using plaque assay and AEC staining after infection of MA-104 cells with the HRV K21 rotavirus.
Results and Conclusion: The data obtained Showed that the extract of Galla rhois has antiviral effects on MA-104
cell infection of the human rotavirus isolate. The rotaviral infection of MA-104 cells was inhibited more than 80% at
the concentration of 52 ¥ìM of the plant extracts. Since the galla has been used many hundreds years in oriental
medicine, their side effects and toxicity to patients are largely proved. Therefore, the present data indicate that the
galla extracts may be an effective herbal in treating rotaviral infection.
