Abstract
Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a type of cystic tumor in the pancreas. It is an adenoma where the
epithelial cells of the pancreas secrete mucus, and the most common cystic tumor in the pancreas can be found in
South Korea. IPMN is classified into two types by its origin: main-duct IPMN and branch-duct IPMN. Its clinical
importance emerges when it changes into a malignant tumor or becomes the cause of acute or recurrent pancreatitis.
The author came across a patient who was hospitalized for acute pancreatitis and was confirmed through an imaging
test to have had branch-duct IPMN 3.6 cm in size in the uncinate process of the pancreas. The patient underwent
pancreatic sphincterotomy via endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and the acute pancreatitis
was alleviated after the procedure.
