Migration of Intrauterine Device to Sigmoid Colon : A Case Report
Kim Dae-Dong

Abstract
The intrauterine device (IUD) is a well-tolerated, widely used contraceptive. A major but infrequent complication of
the IUD is perforation of the uterus and migration of the device into the abdomen. A 36-year-old woman with a
history of IUD placement 7 years earlier presented with complaints of abdominal pain. At presentation, she was
afebrile with normal vital signs and her physical examination was unremarkable. Abdominal computed tomography
(CT) scan suggested intraperitoneal extrusion of the IUD to the sigmoid colon. The IUD was removed with a
laparoscopic sigmoid colon wedge resection. IUD migration is usually diagnosed through routine follow-up after
placement and then further investigation with pelvic ultrasonography and plain-film abdominal radiography is
warranted. Treatment for removal of a migrated IUD is its removal by surgical laparoscopy or laparotomy.
