Ihe effects of various sedative cyclopeptides and peptide a1kaloids from the Zizyphus species on calmodulin-dependent Ca2+_ATPase and phosphodiesterase were investiga ted. Calmoduliu-induced activation of Ca7+-ATPase was strongly inhibited by sanjoinine-A dialdehyde (IC50,2.3mcM),-Ahl (IC50,4.0mcM),-A (IC50,4.6mcM), and -G2 IC50,7.2mcM), while calmoduliu-induced activation of phosphodiesterase was strongly inhibited by both deachuine-S10 (IC50,4.9mcM) and sanjoinine-D (IC50,9.0mcM). The Inhibit01y activity of the various cyclopeptides and peptide alkaloids on Ca2+-ATPase was fouud to correlate well with their sedative activity.
