MRI Volumetric Measurement of Prefrontal Lobe in Schizophrenic Patients


Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the relationship between schizophrenia and the volume changes of the prefrontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere. Also it aimed to examine whether the clinical symptoms of schizophrenia such as positive
symptoms and
negative symptoms were associated with the anatomical volume of the prefrontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere in schizophrenics.
Schizophrenic group consisted of 17 inpatients who were diagnosed according to the DSM-¥²-R criteria. Control group consisted of 10 normal healthy volunteers who were age-, sex-, weight-and educationally matched with schizophrenic group. All the
subjects in schizophrenic group and control group were right-handed, and had no abnormal signals.
The volume of the prefrontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere was measured on magnetic resonance imaging. Schizophrenic group was divided into tow groups according to the positive and negative symptom scale. Brief psychiatric rating scale was used
to
assess the global psychopathology.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. The volumes of the prefrontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere in schizophrenic group were significantly smaller than those in control group(df=26, P=0.0007).
2. The volumes of the prefrontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere in positive symptom patients group were significantly smaller than those in control group(df=24, P=0.05).
3. There were no differences in the volumes of the prefrontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere between the negative symptom group and the control group.
4. The score of brief psychiatric rating scale did not correlated with the volumes of the prefrontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere.
These results suggest that schizophrenia might be related with the volume changes of the prefrontal lobe of the dominant hemisphere. And it seems that the positive symptoms were associated with the volume changes of the prefrontal lobe.
