Quantitative changes of purine nucleotides in the brain tissues of the lidocaineinduced convulsion in rats were studied in relation to time course. The portion of medulla and pons was separated from rats sacrificed 6 minutes and 12 minutes after lidocaine injection. The rats given physiological saline and immediately sacrificed were used as control. Specimens were analyzed for their contents of ATP, ADP, AMP, GTP, GDP, GMP and DNA. Onset of convulsion was begun from 4 minutes to 9 minutes after lidocaine (70 mg/kg of body weight) injection. Average onset was shown approximately 6 minutes after lidocaine injection. After 12 minutes, all the rats used m present study showed convulsion. The ATP contents steadily increased in the brain tissues, reaching a maximum in the rats which were sacrificed 12 minutes after lidocaine injection. The contents of GTP, GDP and ADP in the rats which were injected lidocaine showed slightly increasing tendency than in those of control. But the contents of AMP and GMP slightly decreased. It is suggested that ATP content seems to increase to compensate the much needed ATP energy for transmission of impulses.
