Abstract

To investigate the production of siderophore as one of potential virulence factors in urinary tract infection, a total of 101 Escherichia coli (E. coli) strains isolated from pathologic urinary specimens were tested for the presence of aerbactin
and
iron regulated membrane proteins. Seventy-four(73%) strains of E. coli produced aerobactin and these strains were compared to the rest of aerobactin non-producing strains in the aspects of the antibiotic susceptibilty, hemagglutination activities
and
outer membrane proteins. Aerobactin producing strains were more susceptible to antibiotics than non-producing strains. Striking difference of antimicrobial resistance between aerobactin producing and non-producing strains was the resistances
against
ampicillin(44.6% vs 68.9%) and kanamycin(66.7% vs 85.2%). Twenty seven (37%) of aerobactin producing strains were multiply resistant to more than 6 drugs whereas 14(51%) of non-producing strains were resistant. The incidence of positive mannose
resistant hemagglutination or mannose sensitive hemagglutination reaction and colicin production were more among aerobactin non-producing strains than aerobactin producing strains, on the contraty, hemolysin producing strains were much less in
aerobactin non-producing strains. Expression of iron-regulated membrane protein of 86EC4 and 86EC18 strains among aerobactin producing Escherichia coli were markedly different from any other strains when they were cultivated in the media
containing
iron-chelating agent, a, aE1-dipyridyl. These results suggested that aerobactin production for adaptation in iron deficient condition was closely related with the ability to produce hemolysin.
