Abstract

|
Primary carcinomas of the external auditory canal are rare and they can easily invade adjacent organs at an early stage. The standard treatment is the temporal bone resection corresponding to the extent of the lesion, followed by postoperative
radiation
therapy. In most cases, however, the prognosis is relatively poor. We experienced four cases of carcinomas of the external auditory canal from 1989 to 1996. Three cases were misdiagnosed during the first assesments and proved to be carcinomal
after
surgical biopsies. In this regard, histologic confirmations should be utilized on order to decide on the presence of malignancy for cases of polyps or granulation of tissue in the external auditory canal.
