Isolation of Vibrio vulnificus from shellfish

Abstract
The authors surveyed 250 shellfishes for the isolations and identifications of Vibrio vulnificus in Kunsan shore area during August, 1985. The following results were obtained
1. The isolation rate of the organisms from shellfishes was 10.8%(27 strains) The highest of them was observed as 18 strains in oyster, while 9 strains were isolated in clabs, clams and tegillarias but isolation rate did not make remarkable differences.
2. The positive rate of citrate test and lysine decarboxylase about the shellfish strains was 100%, While that of the human strains was 81.8%.
The positive rate of mannitol test about the shellfish strains was 66.7%, while that of the human strains was 81.8%, but other cultrual characteristics were nearly similar.
3. In temperature tolerance, after all the strains of shellfishes and humans were stored at -20C for 24 hours but not grown at 37C for 48 hours. They were not cultured at 54C for 24 hours but all strains were cultured at 2, 30, 37, and 43C for 48 hours.
4. Both strains were not cultured at pH 4.0 in pH tolerance, but cultured at pH 5.011.0 range and alkali resistance about shellfish strains was high.
5. Both strains were not grown at 0, 8,10 % sod. chloride tolerance, but growth range was 0.26.0% sod. chloride, while in 6010 sod. chloride concentration, Both human strains and shell-fish ones were cultured as 33% and 92% respectively.
6. All of the isolates from human and shellfish were susceptible to amikacin, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, gentamicin and trbramycin. To colicin, the human and the shell-fish onstrainses showed high resistance of 100% and 86% respectively. To carbenicillin and cephalothin, both strains showed intermediate over 50%, but only shellfish strains were resistant as about 20%
