Abstract
|
|
|
Malignant histiocytosis(MH) is a disease that is characterized by a systemic
proliferation of morphologically atypical histiocytes. Almost without exception, patients
who have MH present with symptoms of an acute, rapidly progressing illness with
fever, weight loss, and generalized debilitation. Lymphadenopathy, hepatomegaly, and
moderate splenomegaly are often present.
It is our purpose in this paper to describe a patient with MH who initially had
massive splenomegaly without associated systemic symptoms for eight months. The
diagnosis of MH was made after histologic evaluation of splenectomy specimen with
bone marrow and terminal ileum lesions.
