Abstract

|
The epethelial surface of the human cervix with histologically normal epithelium, squamous metaplasia, dysplasia, carcinoma in situ and invasive squamous carcinoma was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Striking differences among them were seen. With the progression from normality through dysplasia to carcinoma, there was increased pleomorphism and rounding up of individual cells. In addition, pleomorphic microvilli were more numerous and their shapes were more variable with branching forms and bulbous tips. The fact that there was some similarity between squamous metaplastic cells and dysplastic or carcinoma cells led support to the hypothesis that cervical neoplasia basically arises from metaplastic cells.
