To observe the effect of surgical stress on serum cholesterol, a study was done through various
period in 30 patients who was known his operative day and in 8 discharged patients after intake
of high fat & protein diet during one month.
Serum cholesterol determinations were performed on 30 patients before and after various surgical
procedures and his discharged day. The 23 of patients had a decrease in serum cholesterol concen
tration postoperatively.
The average maximal decrease in cholesterol was 74§·% and occurred on the first or second
day following surgery. But in 7 of 30 patients postoperative serum cholesterol appeared maximal
elevation of cholesterol which was followed with the effected postoperative decrease.
The average maximal increase in cholesterol was 64§·% and occurred on the second day follo
wing surgery.
The effect of high fat & protein diet on serum cholesterol was studied in 8 discharged patients.
This dietary regimen did not produce a significant increase in serum cholesterol concentration.
Some of the factors and mechanisms which may contribute to the observed decrease in cholesterol
concentrations have been briefly discussed.
