A study of ZnXGe-XFe2O4(X=0,0,1.0) by X-ray Diffraction and Mossbaurer Spectroscopy

Abstract
The crystallographic and magnetic properties of the antiferromagnetic ZnXGei-XFe2O4(X=0.O,1.0) have been studied by Mossbauer and X-ray measurements. The crystal structures are found to be normal spinel and Zn2~ and Ge irons occupy the tetrahedral sites.
Mossbauer spectra have been collected over the temperature range 12-485K The Mel temperature of GeFe2O4, ZnFe-,04 are found to be 13K, 35K The isomer shifts for Zn,Gei Fe2O4(X=0.0,1.0) indicate that the charge states of Fe iron are ferrous and ferric in character, respectively. The presence of quadrupole splittings above the Noel temperature indicate that iron ions in (G e4 +) A[ Fee + 1 B04 and ion Zn2+ A[ Fe+ ] B04are 2 in the local symmetry of trigonal D3a.
The magnetic hyperfine field and quadrupole splitting at 12K for ZnXGei-,Fe2O4(X=0.0,1.0) are found to be 472 kOe and -0.02 mrn/s, respectively.
