Abstract
Histopathological study of the otitis media with effusion was undertaken using transmission electron microscopy. The mucosa in SOM consisted mainly of secretory cells in various stages, together with some ciliated cells.
Especially secretory granules in the middle ear epithelium are probably associated with mucous secretion into the tympanic cavity. The majority of the mucoid effusion appears to be the result of secretion of the proliferated epithelium.
We could not find the goblet cell in the middle ear mucosa, and so secretory function may not be carried out by the goblet cells.
