CT Findings of PNS Diseases with Unilateral Opacity

Abstract
We studied 88 cases who had been identified unilateral PNS opacity with the PNS CT from March, 1986 to July, 1990.
The resuts were as follows:
L There were 56 males and 32 females(I.75: 1).
2. There were various symptoms, such as prulent rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, foreign body sensation, epistaxis and headache etc- All age groups were involved, but malignant tumors were more prevalent in the elderly groups.
3. There were various causes of the unilateral PNS opacity. Inflammatory conditions were 38 cases(43%) and tumorous conditions were 50 cases(57%
4. Relatively specific CT findings were as follows:
a) Chronic nonspecific inflammation showed mucosal thickening(98%), bony sclerosis(82%) and small sinuses, but these were no evidence of bony destructions.
b) Aspergillosis showed mucosal thickening(100%X bony sclerosis(100%) and calcifications in the mass, associated with bony destruction in the half cases.
c) Antrochoanal polyp and inverted papilloma showed similarity of their location, mucosal thickening and bony sclerosis, however, rare to minimal contrast enhancement in the former and more aggresive, such as bony destruction in the later.
d) Malignant tumors showed contrast enhancement of tumor mass(100%) and bony destruciton(94%) and CT scan provided information about the extent of disease and planning of treatment.
e) In other remainning benign tumors, CT scan showed their primary location, internal architecture and characteristic CT features for leading possible diagnosis.
